Water level, evaporation & leaks
In Phoenix-area summers, pools commonly lose a quarter inch or more a day to evaporation. If your pool drops faster, you may have a leak.
The bucket test
- Set a bucket on a pool step and fill it to match the pool level.
- Mark both levels and turn off the auto-fill.
- After 24 hours, compare. If the pool dropped noticeably more than the bucket, look for a leak.
Keep the level right
Water should sit around the middle of the skimmer opening. Too low and the pump can draw air.
Recommended supplies
- Pool water leveler / auto-fill
- Solar pool cover — Cuts evaporation and holds heat.
- Pool leak detection dye — Find leaks at fittings and cracks.
